Searching for Significance? How the Fivefold Ministry Can Empower You
“ I don't think you really reach the deeper fruit without struggle. Jesus said those who are bearing fruit, I will prune so they bear more fruit.” - Neil Cole
Embracing the Fivefold Ministry Gifts: A Chat with Neil Cole
In a recent episode, I sat down with Neil Cole, a seasoned church planter and author, to explore the fivefold ministry gifts from Ephesians 4. Neil shared his journey from traditional pastoral work to a more organic approach to church planting and discipleship. We discussed how apostles, prophets, evangelists, shepherds, and teachers play unique but essential roles in building up the church. When these gifts work together, they create a dynamic, thriving community—even though collaboration can sometimes create tension.
Neil’s transition from traditional ministry to church planting in Southern California and Arizona showed him the limitations of conventional models. This led him to develop "Life Transformation Groups," small groups focused on discipleship, and eventually embrace a more relational, organic style of ministry.
We also touched on how church influence is shifting globally, with vibrant expressions of faith emerging in the Global South. Neil’s insights reinforced the importance of these ministry gifts and how they can help the church grow in a more authentic, impactful way.
